Face in the Shattered Mirror

Note: This little drabble fic. Has been bothering me ever since seeing episode 10 of Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 0. It’s a bit of a cross over from that episode and Chapter 7 of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Shadow Games Manga. So I hope you enjoy.

A name.

That’s one of the few things that the unlocked spirit of the Millennium Puzzle knew about the boy who had released him. It was a name that the spirit heard Ushio-san, the first wicked soul to cross his path, uttered at his sudden presence. It was a name that sounded odd in the spirit’s ears; a name in a language that, he knew for certain, was not his own even though that language was lost to the wind

' "At the time of Crucifixion the dogwood had been the size of the oak and other forest trees. So firm and strong was the tree that it was chosen as the timber for the cross. To be used thus for such a cruel purpose greatly distressed the tree, and Jesus nailed upon it, sensed this.

" Because of your regret and pity for My suffering, never again shall the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used as a cross. Henceforth it shall be slender and bent and twisted and its blossoms shall be in the form of a cross--two long and two short petals. And in the center of the outer edge of each petal there will be nail prints, brown with rust and stained with red, and in the center of the flower will be a crown of thorns, and all who see it will remember." '

At my alma mater dogwoods were a common sight. There were a few in front of the dorms, a few in between the buildings, and a few behind the Student Union. It always got me that I seemed to be the only one who noticed them. I grew up with that legend above and although I don't claim to be super religious that story has always stayed with me as well as the feeling that the dog wood was something more then it seemed.
